ECO’s goal is to redirect the world’s future toward peace and sustainability. We understand that this can only happen if open-hearted, dedicated people from around the world join in the effort to co-create a culture of mindful living. For that reason, ECO focuses on providing training and education, developing training facilities, and organizing community actions. We call this the Earth Citizen Movement.
Like many other movements, the seed of the Earth Citizen Movement was planted by one person’s vision. In this case, that man was Ilchi Lee. When he started teaching mind-body exercise at a public park in South Korea 36 years ago, he began a movement that would soon inspire hundreds of thousands of people. Believing that hope for a better world lies in awakening the greatness in human nature, he created Brain Education as a system for the development of human potential. He has dedicated his life to helping people harness their brain power to create positive changes in their lives and communities.
In Ilchi Lee’s view, in order to make a better world, we must shift our consciousness in certain simple, but fundamental ways. The key lies in learning to view ourselves first and foremost as Earth Citizens. Before we are citizens of a nation or members of an ethnic group, we belong to the Earth. Realizing this is the only way we can move beyond the pettiness that keeps us divided and disconnected. To avoid the looming environmental disasters we are now facing, acknowledging that the planet’s care is our collective responsibility is essential. His ideas on the Earth Citizen Movement are well-described in his books, including Earth Management: A Dialogue on Ancient Korean Wisdom and Its Lessons for a New Earth.
Ilchi Lee stresses that the desire for peace and happiness is common to all cultures, no matter how diverse they may be otherwise. Activating this impulse is just a matter of moving beyond ingrained habits to reach for the highest possible versions of ourselves.
