About the Makahiki Earth Games

Rooted in the traditional Makahiki season—an ancient four-month celebration of peace, harvest, and renewal—these games draw inspiration from Hawaiian activities of strength, skill, and mental focus. Historically compared to the ancient Olympics, Makahiki was a time to honor Lono, the god of rain, agriculture, peace, and fertility. Today, these traditions live on through activities that encourage physical vitality, cultural learning, and joyful community connection.

The Meaning of the Aloha Spirit

More than a greeting, aloha is a living philosophy—a life force, an offering of love, and a pathway into the collective whole. Translated as “Breath of Life,” the Aloha Spirit reflects a way of being that fosters compassion, unity, gratitude, and humility. For ancient Hawaiians, living in aloha was akin to attaining spiritual enlightenment.

This profound ethic is even enshrined in Hawaiʻi state law (HRS §5-7.5), known as the Aloha Spirit Law, which centers on five guiding principles:

  • Akahai – Kindness, expressed with tenderness

  • Lōkahi – Unity, expressed with harmony

  • ʻOluʻolu – Agreeableness, expressed with pleasantness

  • Haʻahaʻa – Humility, expressed with modesty

  • Ahonui – Patience, expressed with perseverance

These values encourage each person to align mind and heart, think good thoughts, and share positive feelings with others—an obligation gifted to all who call Hawaiʻi home.

Participants will leave inspired to carry the true spirit of aloha into their daily lives—fostering kindness among neighbors, respecting the earth, and embodying gratitude, compassion, and humility. This is more than an event; it is a movement to uplift our communities and extend love to all who visit our islands.
